Cottage Grove has more going on than most towns four times its size. Six covered bridges, including the oldest in Lane County and the only covered railroad bridge left west of the Mississippi. The Row River Trail runs sixteen paved miles out along Dorena Lake on an old Bohemia Mining Company rail bed. In 2015 the loop became Oregon's first designated scenic bikeway.
Main Street has been a film set more than once. Buster Keaton shot The General here in 1926. Animal House came through in 1977. Stand By Me used the Harms Park trestle in 1986, which means a decent share of the country has looked at Cottage Grove without knowing it.
Gold came out of Bohemia Mountain starting in 1858 and the town still throws Bohemia Mining Days every July. The Chambers Railroad Bridge went up to feed a sawmill, got abandoned in 1951 after the mill burned for the third time, was leaning over by 2010, and got a 1.3 million dollar rebuild in 2011 because the town was not going to let it fall down.
Best of all: in 1893 the residents east of the Coast Fork seceded, named their town Lemati, and fought a running battle over the post office that at one point involved dragging the building across the river overnight. They patched it up in 1899. Cottage Grove is not a place that gives things up easily.
Cottage Grove is a real town with real services, and we are not going to argue you should point the car north for something routine. Here is where the drive genuinely earns itself.
