In 1846 a party of four came up the valley looking for somewhere to stop. Elijah Bristow got to a low ridge sitting between the Coast Fork and the Middle Fork, looked at the mountains behind it, decided it reminded him of Virginia, and stayed. He named the claim Pleasant Hill. His cabin was finished by about October of that year, and it was the first permanent one in what is now Lane County.
Here is the part locals enjoy. One of the other men in that party was Eugene Skinner. He kept going northwest and put his claim down where Eugene is now. So the city with the university, the airport, and the traffic is the one that came second. Bristow and his wife Susannah went on to start the county's first church and gave the land for its first school, and the monument on Highway 58 south of Edenvale Road has a fireplace rebuilt from his original stones.
Pleasant Hill has been comfortably out of town for about 180 years and has never seemed troubled by it. Elijah Bristow State Park runs 847 acres along the Middle Fork below Dexter Dam. Highway 58 carries on past Dexter Reservoir, the Lowell Covered Bridge, and Lookout Point toward the pass. Ken Kesey grew up here. The high school track hosted Bill Bowerman's Oregon runners in the seventies.
