What Parents Worry About

We Hear You. Here's How We Handle It.

Every parent walks into the dental office with the same set of questions. Here are the four we hear most often, and exactly how we approach each one.

"What if my kid is scared?"
Reassurance

We Move at Their Pace

We start with a tour, not a tool. Kids meet our team, see the chair, and watch what happens before anything touches their mouth. Most kids relax once they realize they're in control of the timing.

"Is the dentist actually good with kids?"
Experience

Dr. Collins Is a Dad

Dr. Collins has two kids of his own. He knows what works with toddlers, what works with first-graders, and what works with eye-rolling teens. The approach changes with the age, but the patience stays the same.

"When should the first visit happen?"
Timing

Around the First Birthday

The American Dental Association recommends a child's first dental visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits build comfort and catch concerns before they become problems.

"What if my kid has a cavity already?"
No Judgment

Cavities Happen. We Fix Them Gently.

Cavities in kids are common and not a parenting failure. We treat them with the smallest, gentlest approach possible, using the same modern materials as our dental fillings for adults. Quick visits mean your child won't dread coming back.

Care by Age

What Kids' Dental Care Looks Like at Each Stage

A two-year-old's visit looks nothing like a fourteen-year-old's. Here's what we focus on at each stage.

Ages 1-3

The First Visits

Short, low-pressure visits focused on getting comfortable with the chair, the team, and the routine. We check tooth development and talk parents through home care.

Main FocusBuilding trust. No tools, no pressure.
Ages 4-7

The Routine Years

Regular cleanings, fluoride, and full exams begin. Baby teeth start falling out, permanent teeth come in, and we monitor everything along the way.

Main FocusPrevention and routine cleanings.
Ages 8-12

The Mixed-Tooth Years

A mix of baby and permanent teeth. We add sealants to back molars when they erupt, watch for orthodontic concerns, and reinforce daily care habits.

Main FocusSealants and orthodontic monitoring.
Ages 13-18

The Teen Years

Wisdom tooth monitoring, sports mouthguards, and helping teens take ownership of their oral health. If a tooth gets chipped at practice, our emergency dentist care handles it same-day.

Main FocusIndependence and adult-level care.

Why Kids Like Dr. Collins

A Dad First, a Dentist Second

Dr. Collins is a father of two who lives right here in the Eugene-Springfield area. He doesn't talk down to kids, he doesn't rush them, and he stops if a child needs a break. The result is kids who actually look forward to coming in. You can get to know Dr. Collins before your first visit.

Father of Two

Dr. Collins parents young children of his own. He understands every stage from the inside.

Patient and Calm

No rushing, no bribes, no shortcuts. Visits move at the pace your child is ready for.

Education First

We teach kids what's happening and why, so they leave understanding their own oral health.

Yes. Our kids dentistry care starts around the first birthday. Early visits are short and low-pressure, focused on getting your child comfortable with the chair, the team, and the routine rather than doing much in the mouth.

We start with a tour, not a tool. Kids meet the team, see the chair, and watch what happens before anything touches their mouth. Dr. Collins explains each step in kid-friendly language and stops whenever a child needs a break. Most kids relax once they realize they're in control of the timing.

For most kids, yes. Sealants protect the deep grooves of back molars where cavities love to start, and fluoride strengthens developing enamel during the cavity-prone years. Both are quick, painless, and part of routine kids dentistry visits at our Springfield office.
