Five Situations We Handle Same-Day

Not every dental problem is an emergency, but some absolutely are. Ignoring the wrong one can mean the difference between saving a tooth and losing it. These are the situations we see most often.

01

Severe Toothache

Pain that keeps you up at night or stops you from eating usually points to infection, a dying nerve, or a deep crack. We diagnose fast and get you out of pain. Toothache treatment details.

02

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Falls, hard food, sports impacts, and old fillings that finally give out. Cracks can hide serious damage underneath. We can often restore the tooth same-day. Broken tooth repair details.

03

Knocked-Out Tooth

A true dental emergency where time matters most. If you can get to our office within 30 to 60 minutes, there's a real chance we can save it. Keep the tooth moist and call on the way.

04

Lost Filling or Crown

Leaves the tooth underneath exposed and vulnerable. Sensitivity builds quickly and the tooth can fracture or decay fast. We can re-cement or replace most lost restorations same-day.

05

Dental Abscess or Infection

Swelling in your jaw or face, fever with tooth pain, or a pimple-like bump on your gums means infection. Don't wait this one out. Dental infections can spread to the jaw, neck, and beyond.

06

Need to Get In Today

Sometimes you just know something's wrong and it can't wait until next week. We hold same-day slots open for situations exactly like this. Same-day appointment details.

Steps to Take Before Your Visit

Getting to us quickly is always the first step. But there are things you can do in the meantime to protect the tooth and manage the pain.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Steps to Save the Tooth

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown, the part you chew with. Never touch the root.
  • Rinse it gently with water if it's dirty. Don't rub or scrub it.
  • Try to place it back in the socket if you can.
  • If you can't, put it in a glass of milk or between your cheek and gum.
  • Call our Springfield office immediately and come straight in.
Pain Management

While You Wait to Be Seen

  • Take over-the-counter ibuprofen as directed to take the edge off.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water if there's bleeding from the gum.
  • Avoid chewing on that side until you're seen.
  • Don't put aspirin directly on the gum. It burns the tissue.

When to Go to the ER Instead

If you have facial swelling combined with difficulty breathing or swallowing, a high fever, or trauma to the jaw or face, go directly to the emergency room. Call us afterward to schedule follow-up care.

Emergency Dental FAQ

A dental emergency is any situation involving severe pain, swelling, bleeding that won't stop, a knocked-out tooth, a broken tooth with exposed nerve, or signs of infection like fever or facial swelling. If you're unsure, call our Springfield office and describe your symptoms. We'll help you decide whether you need to come in right away.
We strongly recommend calling first so we can prepare for your arrival and make sure Dr. Collins has time set aside. We hold same-day emergency slots, but a quick phone call lets us triage your situation and tell you exactly when to come in. Call (541) 746-9552 as soon as you can.
Cost depends on what's needed. Some emergencies are resolved with a quick exam and prescription. Others require fillings, crowns, or other treatments. We provide a clear written estimate before any work begins so you know what to expect. Most dental insurance plans cover a portion of emergency exams and treatments. Visit our patient resources page for more.
Call us first. Stay calm so your child stays calm. If a baby tooth is knocked out, don't try to put it back in the socket. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, follow the same steps as for an adult: pick it up by the crown, keep it moist in milk or saliva, and come straight in. We treat patients of all ages.
Most dental emergencies don't happen overnight. Cavities, cracks, and infections build up over months or years. Routine dental exams and cleanings catch small problems before they become emergencies. Regular preventive care is the single best way to avoid the kind of pain that brings patients in unexpectedly.
Many emergencies need follow-up. A cracked tooth may need a crown. A lost tooth may need an implant or other replacement. We handle the full range of restorative and replacement work in-house, so you don't need to bounce between providers after the emergency is resolved.
